Self-Publishing

We live in a time where you can publish your own book and make it available to readers worldwide. I know; I've done it four times. And make no mistake, self-publishing is a difficult process, but if you're tenacious about what you want to achieve, you will get results.

I have been where you are now: at the end of your writing journey and at the start of your self-publishing journey. Th
e first question you need to ask yourself is: "What do I want to achieve from my self-publishing experience?" It's a simple question, but a very important one. For example, there's a big difference in printing a memoir and making it available to a small audience of family members, or wanting to print thousands of copies of a sci-fi epic and setting off on a cross-country promotional tour. You need to carefully factor in time, cost, desire, and expectation. Self-publishing is a commitment, and like everything else in life, the more time you dedicate to it, the better the result you will achieve.

Other questions you might have are:
  • Do you want to print your book but don't know where to find a printer at the best price?
  • Do you want to convert your book to e-book and upload to Amazon, Chapters Indigo, Barnes and Noble, etc. but don't know how?
  • Do you have the ambition to promote your book but don’t know where to start?

In an informal and highly informative conversation, I can offer you my personal experiences in self-publishing my books, taking into account the design process, the printing process, website creation (or updating), book promotion (online and print), and book marketing tactics such as signings, store consignment, and book and craft shows.

You can of course do all of this yourself and there's a great deal of information available online, but my hard-won experience comes from ten years in the trenches of self-publishing and provide valuable insight into what I did right, and, just as importantly, what I did wrong. Taking an hour or two to learn about my experiences may save you time, money, and a great deal of frustration and unnecessary disappointment.

The journey to self-publishing triumph is paved with the stones of many tasks, and it can be a bumpy ride. Trust someone who has been through the process four times already and helped many authors through the process as an editor and as a print manager.
